Fetal, childhood secondhand smoke linked to asthma
Exposure to secondhand cigarette smoke while in the womb or
during childhood substantially increases a child’s risk of
developing asthma and respiratory symptoms as an adult, says an
11-year Norwegian study in American Journal of Respiratory
and Critical Care Medicine that included more than 2,800
adults. Scientists compared the incidence of asthma and
respiratory symptoms to the study participants' self-reported
passive smoke exposure in the womb and during childhood. The
study’s authors believe the combined total exposure to passive
smoke during childhood may have accounted for nearly 25 percent
of adult asthma cases among the study participants.
Under pressure, companies reformulate
OTC cold drugs
Drug companies, under pressure from law-enforcement agencies
and state governments, are reformulating popular cold medicines
to prevent criminals from using them to make methamphetamine.
Pseudoephedrine, many over-the-counter drugs’ main ingredient,
can be extracted by boiling down cold medicines. Toxic chemicals
are then added to turn the substance into meth. Pfizer Inc.
plans to reformulate up to half of its pseudoephedrine products
with phenylephrine by January. Leiner Health Products, a generic
supplier to Costco, Target, Walgreens and Wal-Mart, began
shipping new products containing phenylephrine in June. McNeil
Consumer & Specialty Pharmaceuticals, a division of Johnson &
Johnson, Wyeth and Schering-Plough, also are considering
reformulations.

A
word from President Dr. Myron Zitt
In accordance with the mission statement of the ACAAI, one
of our priorities has been to promote relationships with
allergists throughout the world. Last year, in an effort
to determine the popularity of this initiative,
Immediate Past President Dr. Michael S. Blaiss
conducted an e-news poll that revealed 79 percent of
respondents favored the College’s program to increase
international membership through its participation in
meetings abroad.
By serving as “ambassadors,” ACAAI representatives
invite other attendees at these events to become
International Affiliate Members of the College. To
qualify for this membership category, allergists must:
• Reside in a country outside the United States or
Canada
• Be a graduate of a medical school
• Be licensed to practice medicine in his/her country of
residence
• Have completed special training in allergy/immunology
• Maintain an interest in the practice of
allergy/immunology
International Affiliate Members receive all
communications and member benefits electronically
through the Internet, including online access to the
monthly Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology and the
bi-monthly AllergyWatch; bi-weekly ACAAI eNews
newsletter; and online access to the ACAAI member Web
site.
Last year, the ACAAI joined the Polish Allergy Society
and its president, Dr. Marek Kowalski in
co-sponsoring a very well-attended CME meeting, the
proceedings of which have been published in their
official publication, Alergia Astma Immunologia. This
excellent academic endeavor served as a medium for us to
recruit 44 European allergists to our membership role.
This year, in keeping with the College’s commitment to
expand its global outreach, I and other ACAAI
representatives will be participating in the following
key international meetings:
JUNE/JULY: Dr. Michael S. Blaiss, Dr. Thomas B. Casale,
and Dr. Zuhair K. Ballas joined me in Munich at
the XIXth World Allergy Congress co-sponsored by the
World Allergy Organization (WAO) and the European
Academy of Allergology & Clinical Immunology (EAACI),
June 26 – July 1, to present an ACAAI symposium, “Future
Therapies in Allergic Airway Disease.” The Congress
provides an excellent opportunity to network with the
European allergy community. I will be representing the
ACAAI at meetings of the WAO House of Delegates and at
the Emerging Societies Conference.
AUGUST: We are strengthening our ties in China in
partnership with the Hong Kong Allergy Institute and
other organizations to present the Hong Kong Allergy
Convention in Hong Kong, Aug. 6-7, and the Allergy and
Asthma Convention in Beijing, Aug. 12-13, and in
Guangzhou, Aug. 9-10, initiated by Dr. Helen L. Chan.
SEPTEMBER: For the first time, the College is providing
funding and speakers in support of the ALLSA Congress
sponsored by the Allergy Society of South Africa, Sept.
26-28.
OCTOBER: We are once again jointly sponsoring an
international CME symposium in Sicily, Oct. 6-8, in
partnership with eight other organizations, initiated by
Dr. Joseph A. Bellanti and Dr. Mario La Rosa.
During the year, the College is sponsoring several
programs in collaboration with other societies in
Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Peru, San Salvador and
Uruguay organized by Dr. Jorge Quel, sub-chair of our
International Committee representing countries in
Central and South America. At its recent meeting in
Washington D.C., the Board voted to recognize the
Mexican College of Pediatricians Specialized in
Immunology and Allergy (COMPEDIA) program entitled
Allergy Immunology State-of-the-Art, Oct. 21-22, in
Mexico City.
NOVEMBER: On Thursday, Nov. 3, as a lead-in to our
annual meeting in Anaheim, the European Academy of
Allergy and Clinical Immunology Society will join the
ACAAI in sponsoring a one-day Rhinosinusitis Colloquium.
Friday morning, Interasma will offer a symposium on
“Current Global Issues in Asthma.” On Friday evening,
the College will, as they did in 2004, host Dr. Quel and
the Hispanic American Allergy and Immunology Association
(HAAMA) in conducting an International Symposium.
Looking ahead to next year, I am excited to announce
that the College will be jointly sponsoring the
ACAAI-HSACI Joint Allergy Symposium Allergy Update in
Greece, in collaboration with the Hellenic Society of
Allergy & Clinical Immunology, Sept. 6-9, 2006, in
Athens. Program co-chairs are Dr. Marianne Frieri and
Dr. Alkis Togias.
We are proud to be able to offer outstanding meetings
like the 2004 meeting in Poland and the upcoming
meetings in Sicily this fall and Greece in 2006.
Internationally, nobody does it better than the
allergist!
Dr.
Myron Zitt
President, ACAAI

Left to right: Drs. Thomas B. Casale,
Zuhair K. Ballas, Myron J. Zitt (moderator) and Michael
S. Blaiss presented an ACAAI-sponsored symposium at the
WAO Congress. |

Drugs and Devices |
Germany approves formoterol
fumarate dry powder inhalation device
Germany's Ministry of Health recently approved a formoterol
fumarate dry powder inhalation device, Foradil Certihaler,
made by Novartis Pharma and co-developed with SkyePharma,
for asthma and COPD treatment. The device previously was
approved for use in Switzerland, Austria, Finland, Portugal,
and the Netherlands. It currently is being evaluated by the
U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Regulatory Updates |
Senator Frist urges drug
industry to limit consumer ads
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said pharmaceutical
companies should voluntarily ban consumer-directed
advertising for new drugs for the first two years after
their launch, as well as better balance portrayals of risks
and benefits in such ads. Frist also said he would support
congressional action to protect consumers if voluntary
efforts were too weak, and he requested a probe by the
Government Accountability Office into regulatory oversight
of the ads and their potential impact on drug use,
health-care costs and patient awareness of diseases and
treatments.

Allergy Practice Tip: Personal
Practice
Advice from The Patient-Centered Allergy Practice
Personalize your interactions with patients. Note a patient’s
hobbies or interests in the chart so physicians or nurse
practitioners can spend the first few minutes of a visit
connecting with a person, not just treating a condition.
Or, include a photograph of the patient so physicians can
recall who the patient is before entering the exam room.
This also makes phone interactions seem more intimate. Also,
consider sending gourmet coffee, restaurant certificates or
flowers to patients to mark special occasions. For more
advice on patient satisfaction, visit
www.PatientCenteredAllergyPractice.com
These tips are drawn The Patient-Centered Allergy Practice,
a CME Series in Practice Management, supported through an
educational grant from sanofi-aventis Group and
endorsed by the American College of Allergy, Asthma &
Immunology. |
