Dr. Britt chosen as next President-Elect

L.D. Britt, MD, MPH, FACS, FCCM—a general and trauma surgeon from Norfolk, VA—was named President-Elect of the American College of Surgeons during the Annual Business Meeting of Members held Wednesday afternoon at McCormick Place West.

Dr. Britt has been a Fellow since 1989 and has been active in governance of the College. He has been a member of the Executive Committee of the ACS’s Board of Regents since 2006 and most recently has served as the Chair of that committee. Dr. Britt has also served as Chair of the Finance (2006-2009) and Central Judiciary (2002-2006) Committees. He has served as Chair of the Board of Regents since 2008.

A graduate of Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health, Dr. Britt is currently the Brickhouse Professor and chair of the department of surgery at Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk, VA. Dr. Britt is the first African-American in the country to have an endowed chair in surgery.

Dr. Britt has been a committed participant in other national medical organizations. He was elected director of the American Board of Surgery and was also appointed to the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar Program National Advisory Committee. Additionally, he serves on the editorial boards of several scientific publications, including the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, Annals of Surgery, Archives of Surgery and others.

President George W. Bush recognized Dr. Britt’s leadership role in medicine and in 2002 nominated him to the Board of Regents to the Uniformed Services University, which was later confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

The Vice-Presidents-Elect were also named during the Wednesday meeting. Richard J. Finley, MD, FACS, FRCSC, of Vancouver, BC, is First Vice-President-Elect, and Frederick L. Greene, MD, FACS, of Charlotte, NC, is Second Vice-President-Elect.

Dr. Finley, a general thoracic surgeon, is professor and head of the division of thoracic surgery at the University of British Columbia. A Fellow of the ACS since 1983, Dr. Finley has been actively involved in the governance of the College. He served as Chair of the Board of Governors from 1993 to 1995 and as a Regent from 2000 to 2009. Dr. Finley was a member of several committees of the College, including the Committee on Informatics (2001-2008), the Committee on Emerging Technology and Education (2001-2006), the Committee on Medical Student Education (1991-2001), and the Advisory Council for General Surgery (2000-2009), among many others. He was also instrumental in the development and successful launch of the ACS members-only Web portal and the ACS Case Log System.

Dr. Greene, a general surgeon, is chairman, department of general surgery, Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte, NC, and director of the surgical residency program at that institution. He is also clinical professor of surgery at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Chapel Hill. A Fellow since 1983, Dr. Greene served as Chair of the Commission on Cancer from 2004 to 2008. He was also a member of the Board of Governors from 1995 to 2001. Dr. Greene has represented the College on the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) and is currently the editor of the sixth edition of the AJCC Cancer Staging Manual.
